Nextcloud Success!

After much faffing I’ve finally managed to get Nextcloud working!

I decided to host it on a Digital Ocean droplet as I’d not been satisfied with the performance when I ran it on a Raspberry Pi. I had a couple of failed attempts:

  • Ubuntu 16.04 with the Nextcloud snap: I ran into problems after I tried to move the data folder to block storage and symlink it. I did this whilst the app was runnig and it went… badly. Gave up.

  • Fedora 28: I realise that this is a tutorial for Fedora 27 and Nextcloud 12 - I was using Fedora 28 and Nextcloud 13. I got 403 errors. Possibly due to SELinux?

In the end I followed this excellent tutorial and installed it the old fashioned way with Apache. The only thing I changed was to symlink the www folder from mounted block storage. It worked!

First impressions are great. I’ve copied over my Google Drive documents and set up my calendar and contacts to sync with my iPhone and Mac. Performance seems great on the minimal droplet I chose. I’ll report back when I’ve had chance to use it more.
